Mild as May

2012, EASY, Rotterdam

For the exhibition Easy, I created a sculpture consisting of two high-gloss white panels placed against each other, slightly shifted in length. The high-gloss panels not only reflect the surrounding space but also hint at the shiny materials commonly used in non-spaces such as shopping malls, airports, and luxury stores. The work responds to the rough and unpolished exhibition space. On the white surface lies a cigarette that has left a burn mark, subtly breaking the high-gloss illusion. The title “Mild as May” refers to a well-known Marlboro commercial from the 1920s.
