She brings a cigarette to her lips and takes a long, cool drag on her way out.
A trail of blue smoke is left behind.
For the group exhibition “Aslijnen op kopvlakken” in the industrial Deprezhal in Tilburg, I inserted thin strips of mirrored acrylic into the existing joints. The original factory floor of the Deprezhal is covered with a thick layer of concrete in which six seams have been milled to accommodate natural expansion and contraction. The reflective lines not only merge the roof structure with the floor but also mirror and connect the other artworks in the exhibition.
Through this minimal intervention, the floor becomes a reflection of its immediate surroundings, enhancing the viewer’s awareness of space. In contrast, the woman in the narrative title remains vague and elusive—only the blue cigarette smoke recalls her presence. Upon closer inspection, however, the narrow mirrored seams, too, reveal only fleeting glimpses of what surrounds them. What they display is nothing more than an illusion.
